Damien & The Love Guru will show new and existing works by Aisha Christison, Margarita Maximova and Jasmin Werner for the ‘Invited’ section at this year's edition of Art Brussels.

Aisha Christison’s paintings are as much an abstract portrait of color as they are a figurative still life. The imagery she employs are interwoven fragments of her personal history, portrayed in a way that is saccharine and obscured by memory using a visual language made possible by digital technology yet also shows its roots in European post-expressionism. Christison views painting as an act of funneling or processing of the excess visual stimuli in our digitally assisted lives. The work is a vehicle to play with the interference of this oversaturation into our unconscious, which has resulted from, like most of her generation, formative years spent in between the virtual and physical worlds. The paintings are dreamlike scapes that operate outside of conventional dimensional planes and seek to define the space where experience fails to become verbal language. At once nostalgic and uncanny, her paintings offer the viewer an intimate view to her interior world.

Margarita Maximova’s video practice incorporates modes of thought about language, the collective memory and digital as well as geographic displacement. Maximova analyzes psychological and emotional concepts and investigates how the difference between the personal and the public becomes blurred and constantly needs to be redefined in the present-day. In her most recent body of works she expressed a desire to expose the limits of colloquial and digital language. She is now researching the natural human tendency to perceive a connection or meaningful pattern between unrelated or random things.

Jasmin Werner perceives skilled work and craft as a reference system, alluding to traditions and stories that are connected to the objects and their making. A collective memory is being addressed through a knowledge which is shared. She has been continuing the modular system of sculptural series ‘Ambivalent Ladders’ since 2016 translating the characteristics and proportions of prominent, flamboyant staircases into foldable ladders brought up unanticipated forms.

The coming togetherness of these three artists will create a stirring synergy. The booth scenography for Damien & The Love Guru is designed by Parasite 2.0. Investigation of the status of human habitat acting within a hybrid of architecture, design and visual arts is the source of their rapture.
